Kenya National Union of Nurses & Midwives

GRAND DEMOS IN NAIROBI

Yesterday the 28th June 2017 nurses from across the country converged at Nairobias Uhuru Park and demonstrated to push for the signing registration and implementation of their CBA. The procession which was attended by thousands of nurses, brought traffic to a standstill as nurses traversed the streets of Nairobi with chants of CBA renting the air as KNUN officials made presentation of their petitions to:
i?? Office of the president
i?? Ministry of public service
i?? Ministry of health
i?? Salary and remuneration commission

Acting General Secretary Mr Opetu, while addressing nurses at SRC headquarters said that nurses are professionals and they will not engage in public altercations with John Biiy and that as long as Serem entertains Biiy, nurses will not go back to work. The union also learnt of the deal between Ms Sarah Serem and COG that nursesa uniforms be made under procurement and maintenance, a ploy that was rejected by nurses as uniforms alone cannot sustain them. Other allowances like extraneous allowances, commuter allowances, and house allowances are more important to nurses and therefore need to be addressed first.

Mr Opetu also said that the clause of the nursing service allowances in the just concluded CBA document of the Civil Servants has no attachment with nurses CBA being agitated for. In any case, our rates in nursing service allowance are way above what the Union of Kenya Civil Servants signed for.

Today MOH will be meeting with KNUN to try and solve the stalemate in CBA signing. Meanwhile, Grand demonstrations at Nairobi shall continue being on Mondays starting 9:00am while daily demonstrations will be conducted as per the county clusters.
