NAIROBI GRAND DEMOS

For 115 days health sector have been paralised due to the ongoing nurses strike that commenced on 5th June 2017. Nurses from across the nation again assembled at Afya House Grounds (Nairobi) for a grand demo. The General Secretary Mr. Seth Panyako while addressing nurses praised them for being resilient fighters and promised them that soon they would find an amicable solution to end the strike. He also said that the union is still open for dialogue and he urged the president to come out and address the nurses as he is the duly elected president of the republic of Kenya. That he should not let citizens who voted for him massively die for lack of capacity to go to the private hospitals. He urged the President to mediate over the issue of strike.

His message to the traitors in the hospital was that even though they continue working, they should know that they have been graded as laborers by SRC. The General Secretary asked Nursing Council of Kenya to close all their colleges as they cannot purport to be training students and giving them exams while hospitals are closed. a�?Where are they getting their practicals?a�? The General paused. He vowed that the strike would continue until nurses get their CBA signed.

No sooner had the nurse started their march to the parliament than they were met with explosive teargas hauled at them by Kenya police who hid themselves at strategic places. Nurses and media personalities who were doing coverage on the strike scampered for safety but as they braced the corrosive teargas. They were not deterred from their quest to push for the CBA signing.

It was a brave act that was embraced by both nurses and their officials led by the General Secretary Mr. Seth Panyako who appeared unshaken by the event. Kenya police motive to disperse and scatter nurses were subverted because as soon as the ground settled, the nurses regrouped and began their procession to the parliament building chanting solidarity songs and demanding to be addressed by Hon. Duale.

The Deputy General Secretary while addressing nurse at the parliament grounds condemned in the strongest terms possible the acts of violence meted on nurses by the Kenya Police. He said that it should not be a tradition that whenever Health Workers are out to demand for their rights they are dispersed by teargas. He took the chance to welcome their union brethrens from KMPDU whom were led by their General Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga, Chairman Dr. Oroko and Deputy General Secretary Dr. Thuranira. Three KMPDU officials joined in the demonstrations to be in solidarity with the nurses. They unanimously agreed to support nurses in their quest for CBA signing. They also urged them to remain resilient in their quest for what rightfully belongs to them.

Tharaka Nithi MP Hon. Patrick Munene, a health worker by profession who adressed nurses felt that the issue of health workers could not be given a political side as patients came from both NASA and Jubilee political divide. He took the chance to inform the nurses that he would propose to move a motion in parliament to form Health Workers Commission.
