REPORT ON THE MEETING BETWEEN KNUN AND THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH YESTERDAY 23RD JUNE 2017.
Statement of the problem:
For the longest period now, Nurses have been demanding for the signing and implementation of their CBA which had been negotiated and agreed upon by COG, SRC and KNUN. Talks between KNUN and the two parties fell out thereby leading to a nationwide strike by the nurses. The Government through the Ministry of Health yesterday had a meeting with the Nurses Union to try to end the stalemate that has paralysed operations at various health facilities.
Objectives of the meeting:
1. To seek answers as to why the negotiated CBA is taking ages to be signed, implemented and registered in the court.
2. To know the position of the government concerning the ongoing nurses strike.
3. To establish the solutions to the ongoing nursesa�� strike, which has paralysed operations at the health facilities within the country.
Report review:
The representatives from the ministry of health requested KNUN to renegotiate their CBA, an approach that was strongly rejected by the union as the CBA had reached its final stages and going back to the negotiating table was a ploy by the government meant to belittle the achievements the nurses already made and they are not ready to go that path.
However the representatives from the ministry of health had agreed with 90% of the negotiated CBA contents except some issues noted in part six which deals with the allowances. The union maintained their position that the allowances can neither be reduced nor renegotiated and the union were able to establish what they had in mind to offer as the National Government.
The meeting was adjourned without any agreement and the government through the ministry of health further requested for more time to consult and try to convince SRC on the same monetary items. A meeting has been reschedule for next week Thursday 29th June 2017.
Therefore the strike is till on and the nurses are requested to stay put and expect the strike to last even longer.
